Tree 40: Turkey Oak

Tree Species: Turkey Oak (Quercus cerris)

Owner: Ian Young – NIBS member since 1993 and current club Chairperson

Potter if Known: Chinese

History:

This turkey oak started out life in a quarry in Wales over 25 years ago. It was collected by Kevin Baillie and replanted in his garden for a few years to fatten the trunk. A some point it came into the hands of John Pitt, well known uk potter. John took this tree to the level you see today with a little help from Kevin Wilson who did the carving on the trunk which is now mostly healed over. The tree was then moved on to Peter Warren as John was down-sizing his collection. Ian was in the right place at the right time to add this great tree to his collection. The pot was one made by John Pitt himself but the tree has out grown it and let Ian know this by cracking it!
