Promoting the art of Bonsai in Northern Ireland

Tree 24: Blue Cedar

Tree Species: Blue Cedar (Cedrus atlantica Glauca)

Owner: Ben Bovis

Potter if Known: chinese

History:

Age: Approx 25 years

This cedar bonsai tree was developed from damaged garden centre material back in 2012. It was one of a number of similar trees but was discounted as it had literally fallen off the back of a delivery lorry and the trunk had snapped in half.  This feature, along with substantial lower branching lent itself to a bonsai featuring a ‘jinn’, mimicking the reality of a tree struck and damaged by lightning.

It has slowly evolved over the past 14 years with two major restylings and a thickening trunk. The tree usually produces a number of cones each year. These are normally removed to conserve energy but one has been left on the tree as another notable feature.

This bonsai is particularly attractive for its year-round colour.

Here is a great example of taking a nursery stock plant and with time and effort turning it into a very beautiful tree. A good way for beginners to start bonsai.
