Tree Species: Common Beech ( Fagus sylvatica)
Owner: Josh Reynolds Founding member of NIBS
Potter if Known: Chinese
History: This tree was collected from private grounds, with permission, in about 1990. At the time it was probably about ten years old and was about twenty feet tall. Several major branches were removed as well as a very thick root. The wounds from these removals are still visible- you can see the scars where all but one of the wounds have calloused over.
The tree was planted in the ground for several years while a new leader and side branches developed. It is estimated to be about forty-six years old.
The tree was selected in 2016 for Bonsai30 both for it’s impressive image and quality but it also shows some of our club history and showcases a tree from a founding member. Josh has several other top quality Beech Bonsai. It is great to see it again on display at Bonsai40.
